Listen, Communicate, Rely … Three Keys to Success

There are many times through out your healthy lifestyle journey that you should stop what you are doing and listen to your body. Maybe it’s a new injury from picking up boxes in your garage, an old knee pain that has decided to flare back up, or you feel the flu coming on. Whatever the case may be, you need to listen to your body and take a break! Stay home and rest!

By ignoring your body, you can actually do it more harm then good. For example, when you are sick, your body needs all the energy it can to fight off any bacteria. When you decide to push through and exercise anyway, you are taking away that energy your body needs to fight off the sickness. This is a case, where you should listen to your body and not go in for your workout.

Aside from being sick, clients often come to us with injuries or have just recovered from a surgery. This is critical information that your personal trainer needs to know before starting a program. As you progress through your training program, if something seems a little off, listen to your body and tell your trainer so they can modify your training plan before it turns into something more serious. Many times, people are afraid to speak up, but as trainers, our feelings won’t be hurt. We want and NEED to know because our main priority is to prevent injury while on our training program.

Easing back into your workouts after being sick or injured can be very frustrating. If you have been out for two weeks with the flu or three months due to a surgery, you must again listen to your body. It is not only important for your recovery but for your health and your progress. Slow and steady wins the race and that is something that is applied by your trainer when easing back into your normal workouts because you need to regain your strength and endurance.

So, the key take aways … LISTEN to your body, COMMUNICATE any issues to your trainer, and RELY on your trainer to guide you through the setback and recovery.
