How to get started with exercising
There comes a point in everyone’s life where they finally feel ‘ready’. They have decided they are ready to put in the work, time and sweat to begin their healthy lifestyle journey. We know that it can be a little intimidating to start this new journey, so we want to give you a few tips that can help you get started.
1. Find a gym that fits
There are so many options when choosing an exercise program: personal training, large classes, open gyms where you are on your own, or even in home programs. While selecting which of these options is best for you, the environment within those options is just as important. At My House Fitness of Allen, our studio is welcoming, clean, fun and a place you actually enjoy coming to on a regular basis. Our trainers pack in a FUN, solid, full body workout with each private or small group session they plan each and everyday! Never a dull moment!
2. Ease back into it
A lot of people start an exercise routine with gusto and end up pushing themselves too hard. Yes, that IS a thing! Your muscles are shocked and will be sore for a few days after starting an exercise program. So, for the first few weeks, we recommend spacing out your workouts to at least every day. Give your body the rest it needs so you can set yourself up for long term success.
3. Warm up, stretch, roll out
Before you start any workout, make sure you know how to warm up and stretch properly. This can speed up the recovery and even keep you from being sore. Big words of advice … NEVER stretch cold muscles! Leave the stretching for after your workout and do 5-10 minutes of cardio to get warmed up before the session. Stretching, and even foam rolling, is so good for anyone after exercising, but especially important for those just starting a workout program. Muscle soreness can scare people away from exercise, but it’s just part of the process. It takes time for your body to adjust to your new workout routine, so by giving it some extra pre and post-workout love, you will help the recovery process and make yourself stronger for the next workout.
4. Water and Food
Drinking enough water and eating the proper foods (before and after your workout) can help you ease back into exercising. Just as you should warm up before your workout and stretch afterward, you need to make sure that you are fueling your body correctly pre and post workout. There are tons of great options for before a workout, oatmeal, toast with avocado or even a banana can be great before a workout. Foods that are higher in protein are best for after a workout, protein shakes, smoothie bowls or you can even have your avocado toast with banana after the workout. The right foods and drinking a lot of water can help your body recover as well.
Starting an exercise program can be challenging, but these tips can help you ease into a workout routine and promote healthy recovery. No one said it will be easy, but we know you can do it and My House Fitness Allen is here to help!
