Fuel your brain and eat your way to a HAPPY MIND
For your brain to function at optimum and produce those all-important, feel good chemicals such as serotonin and dopamine, it is vital to nourish with proper nutrients.
The brain is made up of approximately 60% fat. YES FAT! In simple terms, this fat is primarily omega-3 fatty acids, also known as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid).
To optimize overall brain health, help improve mood and suppress depression, choose high-quality sources of fat. The good, anti-inflammatory kind of fat or what is often referred to as “brain food” includes salmon, flaxseed, chia seeds, walnuts, olive oil, and avocados.
In addition, it is important to supply the brain with amino acids from adequate and clean sources of protein such as chicken, turkey, eggs, cold water fish as well as plant based proteins such as beans, quinoa, tofu and even vegetables. The role of amino acids (found in protein) support “happy” chemical messengers called neurotransmitters. Some studies reveal a relationship between low amino acids and depression.
Lastly, nutrient-dense foods from green, red, purple, and orange plants help support brain function. So, eat for color and eat your fruits and vegetables! Flavonoids and micronutrients found in these type of plant foods can help decrease depression, should you be at risk. Blueberries, spinach, leafy greens, red bell peppers, purple cauliflower, and carrots are a few examples.
One last thing to note. Eating this way will also make your skin glow. Anytime you eat an anti-inflammatory, brain supporting diet, you also eat for your skin’s health. Here’s to your HAPPY MIND and glowing skin!
